El Monte, CA -- Mexicans get deported all the time, but none do so more spectacularly than 28-year-old paisa Jimmy Jimenez from El Monte California, who was deported by his girlfriend, Andrea Gomez, after he threatened to leave her for a traditional rancherita from the state of Zacatecas.
"The estupido woke me up at 6am on Saturday, demanding breakfast. He wanted beans, eggs, a quesadilla on the side, and a warm cup of coffee with pan dulce… que bonito", commented the 25 year old, explaining that after she refused, the paisa threatened to trade her for a girl from his town in Zacatecas, Mexico; one that would not only make him breakfast, but would also sit around the house and wait while he casually started a second family on the side.
Within hours, the paisa was in a deportation bus headed for Tijuana, bringing him closer to his rancherita a lot sooner than he had anticipated. As for Andrea, friends agree that the paisa warnings were there from the start, but she had refused to see them. The couple had been dating for two years and frequently clashed over cultural differences.
Jimenez, a paisa from the state of Zacatecas who immigrated to the US in 2009, was raised in a traditional rancho where horses have been known to have more rights than women. Not surprisingly, he wanted his girlfriend to assume a more traditional role in the relationship.
Andrea, born and raised in Los Angeles California and a graduate of USC, wanted none of that machismo garbage, having witnessed first-hand what it is to live in a "traditional" household. Instead, she wanted a more balanced relationship built on mutual respect and responsibilities.
Yet, despite the advice of her friends that the words balanced and paisa don't go together, Andrea decided to date Jimenez, who she had met at one of her favorite Norteña dancing clubs. Many would say that she was being naive; yet, as Andrea explains, it was more out of necessity.
"My friends told me not to date a paisa, and I had my doubts too, but it's not that simple. I like dancing Norteñas, but very few educated Latinos like this music, so women like me end up meeting and dating nothing but paisas at these clubs", stated the now single Mexicana, who has struggled to find a Mexican who is both educated and traditional but not inflicted with the machismo bug.
After this experience, Andrea says she will take a break from dating guys recently arrived from Mexico. She parted by issuing a word of advice to young Mexicanas out there who are considering dating a paisa: "If he ever tells you he wishes he were with a girl from a pueblo in Mexico, make his wish come true like I did -- it's only a phone call away."
